Şekerbank 'Açıkekran' Yeni Medya Sanatları Galerisi, sezonun ikinci sergisi'ARŞİV II' ile, son yüzyılda yaşanan savaşlar ve göçlerin oluşturduğu 'yer değiştirme' olgusuna sanatsal ve toplumsal yorum getiren yapıtlardan oluşan bir seçkiyi sanatseverlere sunuyor. Açıkekran ile eş zamanlı olarak , ARŞİV II sanatçılarından Christelle Familliari'nin 'Le Passage / Geçiş' adlı eseri, İstanbul Feneryolu, Ankara Küçükesat ve Çankaya, Kırklareli-Alpullu, Ordu, İzmir ve Mardin olmak üzere 7 ildeki Şekerbank şubelerinde de sergileniyor.

Mayıs 2011'de 'Arşiv I: İkilikler' sergisi ile kapılarını sanatseverlere açan Şekerbank 'Açıkekran' Yeni Medya Sanatları Galerisi, ilk serginin devamı niteliğindeki, 'Arşiv II: Yer Değiştirmeler' ile çağdaş sanatı Anadolu'ya taşımaya devam ediyor. Dünyada yaşanan savaşlar ve göçlerin oluşturduğu 'yer değiştirme' olgusuna, sanatsal ve toplumsal yorum getiren sanatçıların video eserlerinin yer aldığı Arşiv II sergisi, 11 Temmuz -26Ağustos 2011 tarihleri arasında izlenebilir.

Küratörlüğünü Prof. Dr. Ali Akay'ın üstlendiği 'Arşiv II: Yer Değiştirmeler' sergisinde; Bouchra Khalili (Fas asılllı Fransız), Christelle Familiari (Fransız) ile Türk sanatçılar Erkan Özgen ve Şener Özmen'in video eserleri sergileniyor. ARŞİV II sanatçılarından Christelle Familliari'nin 'Le Passage / Geçiş' adlı eseri ise, Açıkekran ile eşzamanlı olarak; İstanbul Feneryolu, Ankara Küçükesat ve Çankaya, Kırklareli-Alpullu, Ordu, İzmir ve Mardin olmak üzere 7 ildeki Şekerbank şubelerinde görülebilir.

Bir mülteci ve yaşanan insanlık dramı

ARŞİV II sergisinde 'Straight Stories-(2008)' adlı video eseri ile yer alan Fas asılllı Fransız sanatçı Bouchra Khalili, Irak Haberleri'>Irak'dan Türkiye'ye gelen ve oradan da gelişmiş ülkelerden birine gitmek isteyen bir mülteci ile yaptığı konuşmasından yola çıkarak, insanlık dramına dikkat çekiyor; mülteci kavramını kavramsal ve sosyal bağlamlarıyla sorguluyor. Khalili'nin eserleri bugünlerde dünyanın önemli galerilerinden Marian Goodman Gallery, Paris'de de sergileniyor.

Bir hat üzerinde yer değiştirme ile gelen sıkışıklık

Fransız sanatçı Christelle Familiari ise 'Le Passage / Geçiş ( 2004)' isimli video eserinde, kıyafet değiştirerek oyun oynayan bir yetişkinin, diskoteğe benzer bir mekanda, gelip-gitmesi ve bir hat üzerinde sürekli yer değiştirmesini metaforik olarak ele alıyor. Sanatçı, yer değiştirmenin aynı yerde gidip-gelmekten ibaret olduğunu ve göçebelerin 'Kışlak ve Yaylak' arasında sıkışması gibi, modern insanın da kendi yaşamındaki sıkışmışlığını konu ediyor.

Türk güncel sanatının genç isimlerinden Erkan Özgen 'Adult Game/Yetişkin Oyunları-(2004)' adlı video eserinde, çocukların kovboyculuk oyunlarını hatırlatıyor ve parkta koşturan çocukların; birer haydut gibi yüzlerini gizleyerek oynadıkları oyunun naifliği üzerine düşündürüyor.

Türk çağdaş sanatının usta isimlerinden Şener Özmen, 'Work/İş-(2005)' adlı video eserinde, köylü kadınların, ev içi çalışmalarını ters yüz ederek, bir tür oyuna soktuklarını gösteriyor. İş olarak balonlu naylon patlatan kadınlar için ev işinin yer değiştirdiğini gösteren bu çalışma, aynı zamanda ev ve iş arasındaki sanayii toplumlarına ait olan ayrımı da ortadan kaldırıyor. Postmodern dönemlere ait olarak da okunabilecek bu hareket, işsizlik ve iş arasındaki paradoksa da değiniyor.

Prof. Dr. Ali Akay: "Yersiz yurtsuzlaşma örnekleri bugünün sanatına ışık tutuyor"

Küratör Prof. Dr. Ali Akay, sanayileşme ile birlikte, 19'uncu yüzyılda köy ve şehir arasındaki ayrımın, şehir lehine dönmeye başladığını ve büyük kitlelerin köylerden boşalarak, şehirlerde iş aramaya yöneldiğini belirtti.

Ali Akay, şunları söyledi: "20'nci yüzyılın şehirleşme dönemi, 20'nci ve 21'inci yüzyıl savaşlarının ise 'yer değiştirme' olgusuna 'mülteci' kavramını ekledi. Yer değiştirme ile gelen toplumsal hareketlilik ise, modern sanatları derinden sarsmıştır. 'Arşiv II: Yer Değiştirme' sergisinde, sanatsal ve toplumsal yer değiştirme kavramına bakan sanatçılardan örnek oluşturan bir seçki yapıldı.

But the godfather of the Diyarbakır art community is undoubtedly Şener Özmen. For the past twenty years, Özmen has worked not only as an artist but also as a poet, art critic, translator, and teacher. He collaborates constantly with his fellow Diyarbakır-based artists, has nurtured a new generation of artists, produces texts for exhibition catalogues, designs covers for Lîs Publishing (a prominent Kurdish language publishing house based in Diyarbakır), writes fiction and poetry, and supports the work of the Diyarbakır Arts Centre.

Diyarbakırlıların kitap fuarında kitaplarla buluşması sürerken bugün Diyarbakır'da yeni bir etkinlik başlıyor: 5. Diyarbakır Film Günleri. 22 Mayıs’a kadar sürecek olan Film Günleri’nde, Diyarbakır Sinema Kulübü’nün (DSK) çağrısıyla Türkiye ve Türkiye dışından yaklaşık 120 film arasından seçilen kısa film ve belgesellerin yanısıra etkinlikler ve atölyeler yer alacak.

Diyarbakır Avrupa Sineması ve Sümerpark Yılmaz Güney Salonu’nda gerçekleşecek olan Film Günleri, bu akşam saat 19.00’da, daha önce önemli dünya festivallerinin de olduğu programlarda gösterilen, İranlı Kürt sinemacı Îbrahîm Saîdî’nin filmi Mandû (Yorgun) yönetmenin katılımıyla gerçekleşecek bir söyleşiyle başlayacak.

Programda Türkiye’den Kısa Filmler ve Türkiye’den Belgeseller başlığı altında otuza yakın filmin yer aldığı toplam beş paket gösterilecek. DSK’nın hazırladığı bu seçkide daha önce çeşitli kısa film festivallerinde ilgi görmüş filmlerin yanı sıra, Diyarbakır ve çevresinden gelen ve ilk kez seyirciyle buluşacak filmler de yer alacak. Bölgeden gelen Iraklı ve İranlı Kürt yönetmenlerin filmlerinden oluşan Bölgeden Kürt Kısa Filmleri ve Bölgeden Belgeseller ile Londra Kürt Filmleri Festivali’nin önerdiği filmler arasından DSK’nın hazırladığı bir seçki de programın ilgi çekici bölümlerini oluşturacak. Ayrıca Gezici Film yapımı Kars Öyküleri ve Ermenistan-Türkiye Sinema Platformu’nun ilk filmleri olan ‘Sınırların Ötesindeki Filmler’ de programın heyecan uyandıran bölümleri arasında yer alacak.

HOMOFOBİ KARTIŞI BULUŞMA
Film Günleri’nde gerçekleştirilecek etkinlikler arasında, Erol Mintaş, Serhat Karaaslan ve Arin İnan Aslan’ın filmlerinin gösterimi ardından film yapma deneyimlerinin tartışılacağı bir söyleşi de yer alıyor. Ayrıca KAOS GL tarafından bir bölümde gösterilecek iki belgeselin ardından, Devrim Sezer ve sanatçı Şener Özmen’in katılacağı “Milliyetçiliğin Kapadığı Kapılar Nelerin Üstünü Örter?” başlıklı bir söyleşi gerçekleşecek.

Film Günleri’nde sinemanın üretim tarafında yer almak isteyenler için de iki atölye düzenleniyor. En son Berlin Film Festivali’nin yarışma bölümünde gösterilen Bizim Büyük Çaresizliğimiz filminin yapımcılığını üstlenen Bulut Film’den Yamaç Okur ve Nadir Öperli’nin yürüteceği Yapımcılık Atölyesi, film yapmak üzere yola koyulan genç sinemacılar için bir tür kılavuz işlevi üstlenecek. İlk gün sinemaseverler ve sinema üzerine yazmak isteyenler için düzenlenen Sinema Yazarlarıyla Buluşma ise yine bir atölyeye dönüşerek festival boyunca sürecek. Fatih Özgüven, Fırat Yücel, Engin Ertan ve Senem Aytaç’ın katılacağı Sinema Yazarlığı Atölyesi’nde, deneyimli sinema yazarlarının yazma deneyimlerini okurları ve seyircilerle paylaşmasının ardından, Film Günleri kapsamında gösterilen filmler üzerine yazmak isteyen katılımcılarla festival bültenine dönüşmesi planlanan bir çalışma gerçekleştirilecek.

Nasıl Pop-Art; Mile Gablik’in deyişiyle, “sanatçının kişisel bakışına değil de gerçek dünyaya” yaslanmaktaysa; travmatik sanat bakışıyla Şener Özmen de -bu anlamda- Pop-Art’ın tersine, gerçek dünyanın dışına çıkmaya çalışan bakışında, gerçek siyaseti yersizyurdsuzlaştırmaya çalışmaktadır. Bir yandan popüler kültüre bakan, diğer yandan da sembolikten melankoliye doğru uzanan bir kara mizahi bakışla birlikte, gerçekten kendisini çekip çıkarmaya çalışan sanatsal tavır kendi başına bir yol arayışı içine girmekte midir? Sanırım bu soruyu sormak için daha erken. Ama onlarca soru sorduk zaten. Zaman, her halükârda, gidişat hakkında bize ipuçları vermeye devam edecektir.

Şener Özmen, insanın yol açtığı durumları yine insanın ortaya koyduğu çözümlerde arama umudunu hiçbir zaman yitirmez. Kullandığı dil, sessizlik de olsa bir dildir ve kendini ifade edecek mecraya önünde sonunda erişir. Özmen’in var olduğu ve işlerini teşhir ettiği toprakların bereketi, içinde bulunduğu daimi sosyal sarsıntılardan ve bunun karşısında ortaya çıkan hayatta kalma ve ifade edebilme çözümlerinin çeşitliliğinden kaynaklanır. Ara başlıkları bir araya getirerek yeniden toparlamaya / dağıtmaya çalışırsak, sondan başa şunu tekrarlayabiliriz: Özmen’in eserlerinde her daim kendine bakıldığını bilen bir aynanın farkındalığı bulunur. Sanatçının, varoluşçu bir zorunluluk olarak pazarlıksız kullandığı ifade özgürlüğü, imgelemini ve bunu paylaşma stratejilerini özgün, samimi ama katmanlı kılmaya yol açar. Sanatçının kullandığı dilin özü, görselliğin yoruma açık, müphem sessizliğinde yatar. Eserlerdeki sessizliği kuşatan en önemli unsur ise, post-modern sayılabilecek, ancak özünde hayli idealist ve modernist kavramsallıktır. Özmen, sahtekâr imgelerin gerçekliğe akan sızıntısındaki samimiyetten yana tavır alan duruşuyla, pazarlıksız özerkliğin çifte casusluğunu her seferinde tekrarlar. Şu niye yazılmasın ? Bundan da büyük bir zevk alır.

ÖNSÖZ

Türkiye güncel sanat ortamının 1990 sonrası yakaladığı ivmenin en yenilikçi ve eleştirel kanadını temsil eden Art-ist yayınları, tartışma merkezli yayınlarıyla öne çıktığı gibi, kayıt tutmaya ve bellek oluşturmaya, akıp gidenin bilgisini yapmaya da özen gösterir. Güncel Sanat Dizisi Sanatçı Kitapları işte bu işleve adanmış bir dizi olarak öne çıkar. Türkiyeli güncel sanatçıların farklılıklarıyla, özgünlükleriyle en fazla dikkat çeken öğeleri üzerine adamakıllı düşünme vesilesi olmak ister. Bu amaçla tek tek sanatçılara yoğunlaşan sanatçı kitabı formu tercih edildi. Çünkü sanatçı kitapları bir sanatçının yapıtını derli toplu görmek, süreklilikleri ve kopmaları farketmek için ideal formlardır. Dolayısıyla sanatçı kitapları hem sanatçının külliyatını kavramaya yardımcı olurlar hem de bu genç sanatçıların kimi Türkiye’de sergilenme şansı hiç bulamamış işleri de dahil olmak üzere toplam üretimlerini daha geniş bir kitleye ulaştırırlar. Bir sanatçının üretiminin büyük kısmını bir kitapta topluca görmek, hakkında yapılmış değerlendirmeleri art arda okumak ve sanatçının bizzat kendisini nasıl ifade ettiğine söyleşilerde tanıklık etmek tam bir odaklanma sağlıyor.

Art-ist yayınları, Türkiyeli genç sanatçıların yapıtlarına sanatçı kitapları dizisiyle yoğunlaşmayı 2008’de ‘Ahmet Öğüt; Kayıtdışı Vukuatlar’ kitabıyla başlamış, dizinin ikinci kitabı ‘Bashir Borlakov: Kurgusal Gerçeklik’, üçüncü kitabı ise Can Altay’a ayrılan “Güvercinler İnsan” olmuştu.

Şener Özmen, Türkiye güncel sanatının yükselişe geçtiği 90'lardan beri içinde yer almış, üretken ve kilit bir isim. Sanat işlerinin yanı sıra yazıları, yayıncılık çalışmaları, küratoryal katkıları, sunumları ve edebi eserleriyle de yoğun olarak sürdürdüğü emeğinin sanatımızın çıkışındaki özgün yeri, genellikle periferi-merkez kutuplaşmasını hem küresel ölçekte Batı-Doğu hem de yerel ölçekte Güneydoğu-İstanbul üzerinden işlemesinde ve Kürt (ve bölge) gerçekliğini çok yönlü bir biçimde güncel sanatta temsil etmedeki sürekliliğinde tespit ediliyor. Özmen'in ayrıca yazı ile görsel sanatların iç içe geçişisinin deneysel bir figürü olarak da belirişi sıklıkla vurgulanan tesirlerindendir. Gerek teknik gerekse içerik açısından oynadığı kritik role ve uluslararası alanda hayli dolaşıma girmiş olmasına karşın Özmen hakkında bugüne dek derli toplu bir çalışma yayınlanmamıştı. Elinizdeki kitapla Özmen'in yaklaşık 20 yılı bulan yapıtını çerçeveleme imkânı bulduk.

İşlerinde periferi temasını bunca eşelemiş olmasına karşın Türkiye güncel sanatının kısa tarihinde merkezi bir yere sahip olan Şener Özmen'in çokca tartışılan yapıtını ele alabilmek için faydalı olacak bir kılavuz sunabildiğimizi umuyoruz.

The gallery–curator project curated by_vienna opens up new opportunities of cooperation between galleries and curators. The third edition of curated by_vienna entitled EAST by SOUTH WEST describes a geographical conundrum, which is to be solved by using a contemporary art compass. Vienna’s competency regarding Central and Eastern Europe is being put to the test against the background of globalized mechanisms of contemporary art. 21 internationally renowned curators were invited to develop special exhibitions in cooperation with 21 leading Viennese galleries. The curator René Block has invited six artists from three countries – Bulgaria, Romania and Turkey to Galerie Krinzinger.

René Block (*1942, GE) opened his gallery in Berlin in 1964. At about the same time, he began working as a curator for the Neue Berliner Kunstverein, the Berliner Festwochen and the cityʼs Akademie der Künste. From 1997 to 2006, Block was director of the Kunsthalle Fridericianum in Kassel. After realizing the Nordic Pavilion for the 52nd Venice Biennale (2007), he retired from major international projects. In the same year, he founded a platform for contemporary Turkish art, TANAS, in Berlin. In May 2011 he will be the main juror of the ESSL ART AWARD CEE 2011.

“The invitation to contribute to the gallery project put on by departure was not attached to a specific, comprehensive theme, but rather specified EAST by SOUTH WEST as a geographic motto. Which is certainly a logical direction,from my more North-European standpoint: for Vienna has of course been culturally influenced through itʼs role as door to the Balkans, to South-eastern Europe. It was in Vienna that the House of Habsburg was spreading West-European culture and attracting that of the Slavs and Ottomans. And Vienna has once again become – in line with this tradition and also following the political upheaval of the 1990s in Eastern Europe – a city embracing the exchange and conveyance of different cultures. Although we may not all reside in Vienna, we encounter one another here. My invitation to such an encounter, which will be the first time they all meet, was extended to six

artists from the countries of Bulgaria, Romania and Turkey – three countries connected by a common coastline along the western section of the Black Sea. For this exhibition, several new artworks are being created: installations and objects by Gabriela Vanga (RO) and Pravdoliub Ivanov (BG), photographic works and a joint video by Cengiz Tekin and Sener Özmen (TR). For the duration of the exhibition, these works will interplay with objects by Vikenti Komitski (BG) and Miklos Onucsan (RO) at the Galerie Krinzinger. They will be temporarily stored in Vienna, for a reasonable length of time, before embarking upon what may be their final journey to all ends of the world to new owners.” (René Block) Exhibiting artists The works „Rise to Score“ and „Ornaments of Endurance“ by Pravdoliub Ivanov (*1964, BG) attempt to reveal thoughts and comments towards the presence we all live in. Those absurd connections are the best form of articulation for the artist to understand the global world and can be seen as his visual reaction to tensions,conflicts and strives we have to face and get involved in.

„Broken Book“ by Vikenti Komitski (*1983, BG) is a short political dictionary printed in Bulgaria during the socialist era. The definitions of political terms have changed throughout political changes in the state regime and ideologies, making the edition useless. Living in the western part of Romania the artist Miklos Onucsan (*1952, RO) has been inspired by the legacy of Fluxus and conceptual art, and worked along these lines with other colleagues from the same artistic milieu. Onucsanʼs pieces are undeniably poetical, and they evince a delicate conceptual balance, which makes them equally relevant as subtle political statements. Verbalism is just as much of a working material as any other he

might use, which is evident when looking upon the titles of his works.

Sener Özmen (*1971, TR) often plays the role of the protagonist in his works by himself. Recurring themes debates on Modernity and tradition, progress and conservatism in the arts as well as in the community. Cengiz Tekin (*1977, TR) reveals himself as a fan of the tradition of popular Turkish humour magazines. These magazines have influenced the generation of teenagers who grew up in the aftermath of the coup dʼétat of 1980. Those publications were the only platforms to elaborate a political dissent and a sense of youth culture. Tekin fused the language of local caricature with other visual media. His works often include allusions to the Kurdish question – Tekin is of Kurdish origin.

Gabriela Vangaʼs (*1977, RO) work „Wonder“ is a reference to Jacobʼs ladder, which links the earth and the skyIt is a reflection of our possibility in life to choose in every moment the path we take. It is the metaphor of the eternal middle where the human beings are caught. „No secondary thought“ is a reconstruction of one of the most ancient weapons in human history, a hunting weapon built with Lego cubes, a game which can imitate the reality but cannot sustain it. It is a reflection of the

fragility of our world.

Wyspa Institute of Art, in collaboration with the City of Gdansk and Gdansk 2016 is launching a series of international exhibitions, art events, publications and on-line activities under the title Alternativa scheduled for the Summers of 2011 and 2012. Alternativa aims to investigate the ways in which contemporary art intersects with the political. It seeks diverse modes of knowing and is searching for a performative, affectual apparatus through which we can explore possible ways of existing in contemporaneity. For the exhibitions and events, the newly renovated spectacular space, Hall 90B, is made available along with Wyspa’s and Modelarnia’s own spaces. Located in the legendary Gdansk Shipyard, where the workers’ strikes of 1980 began the process of the disintegration of the Communist bloc, Alternativa looks at the atmosphere of political momentum and its possibilities.

The Summer 2011 programme will materialise in two exhibitions.

Labour and Leisure is a project encompassing that other side of labouring or what is out of sight of the typical representation of the work or worker. It seeks interest in stagnation, spare time and its uses, dreams and phantasies, false identities, forms of survival, frustrations of engagement and failures of transformation. Set up as an open field in which installational works, photo and video works get engaged in the contextual play with the materiality of Hall 90B and the intensity of industrial and artistic life in the surrounding shipyard.

Estrangement: At the very core of the project there is the question of the circulation of cultural forms. The idea of considering the notion in this way arises at the intersection of the poetics of Shklovsky—a representative of Russian formalism—and the Arabic term taqseem, which means both musical improvisation and geometrical division. Found forms and ’everydayness’ are points of entry into the way the project takes shape and disintegrates. “Estrangement” works with various elements that do not seem to be connected then places them under observation and sometimes sets them to work.

Yes, we don’t is a paradoxical affirmation, a suspended ‘No’ that openly assumes its absence of illusion and destination. It is not the resistance of Bartleby who with the famous phrase ‘I would prefer not to’ neutralised reality to upset the norms. Yes, we don’t is more a playful and transgressive attitude, sometimes skirting the absurd, the slogan of a posture in which suspension is affirmed before a decision about possible destinations and measurement of the amplitude of its reception…

Yes, we don’t is formulated in an unprecedented multipolar, virtual and globalised period, imprinted with the acceleration—without limits and without reference points—of data pertaining to both the media and economics and to science and culture. Our perception of time is therefore dislocated, precipitated and tense. Time is no longer a homogenous notion but fragmented in the relation of the subject to the world and in the complex relationships that we have with the real.

How can we interact with our times? Is it still possible? What are the means available, if not upsetting then at least occupying and infiltrating the present? Is still possible to talk in terms of territories that are neither those of particularism nor the abstract space of globalisation, nor above all those of general support of the politically correct?

The artists assembled in this exhibition centred on the works of Bernard Bazile and Simona Denicolai & Ivo Provoost focus on infiltrating systems, occupying zones of temporary actions and inflecting the process of certain realities. The point today is less that of condemning and documenting than of marking a critical space and organising the appearance there of multiple forms of insubordination.

The ‘public thing’ (political and economic power, the street and daily life, the world-wide web and the media) is thus material for transformation, ingestion, deviation, transcoding, individual and collective micro-actions and so forth. More than a support for credulous involvement, language
is used as a transverse tool at the service of absurdity and desired ambivalence.
Combining energy and irony, these artists weave subtle strategies that, while they affirm—‘Yes’—, display a degree of negativeness—’we don’t’— clearly showing their subversion, now, and quickly!

As new series of solo exhibition projects at Künstlerhaus Stuttgart, “ARTISTIC DIALOGUES” bring interrelated contexts, parallel discussions, and juxtaposed ideas together through diverse artistic practices.

The first episode is composed of Sener Özmen`s first solo show at the second floor; "The Story of Sener Özmen / Die Geschicte von Sener Özmen" and a monographic exhibition from Nevin Aladag at the fourth; "Back to First Position / Alles aus Anfang" bridging different cultural climates and challenging current political representations.

Diyarbakir based Kurdish artist and writer Sener Özmen`s work is shaped within the geopolitical reality of South Anatolia of Turkey, where he lives and works -not only as an open critique of state violence and militarist regime, but also as loose diary of resistance and imagination. His video and photography works as well as his fiction including poetry and novel deal with the problematic of taking critical positions against centralization of power at the periphery. He is actively involved in political discussions, and engaged with artistic collaborations, as well as interested in the transition of Kurdish -from a restricted language in Turkey into literature and art library through writings and translations.

His collaborative video works with Erkan Özgen, "The Road to Tate" (2003) and another one with Cengiz Tekin, "“The Meeting or Bonjour Monsieur Courbet”" (2004) created certain international recognition of a specific form of video language that reflects the notions of artistic research and production in that region of Turkey from a generation of conceptualist Kurdish (video) artists.

A visit to Diyarbakir, regular Skype discussions and long phone calls in time between Adnan Yildiz and Sener Özmen have directed the question of how some of his previous works that have been shown before in many group shows and screenings can be revised or reconstructed into a solo presentation regarding the context of Stuttgart and architectural reality of Künstlerhaus Stuttgart.

Özmen sometimes appears in his own work like an anti-hero, and mostly plays with constructions of different genres and styles, and -at the end, turns them into his own statements. The photography series from 2003, titled as "Supermuslim" is reprinted as wallpapers being attached to the space as a regeneration of an already existing work. As a Muslim `Superman`, Özmen prays as if he is following the instructions from a "how to pray" book that teaches praying for Muslim kids. From post-9/11 perspective to Obama`s America, critical transition of political identities and post-politicization of religious conflicts are reflected on one fictional identity who is a "Super hero" and "Muslim" at the same time. The exhibition process has provided another opportunity of bringing another piece back today; an artist book from Sener Özmen, "The Story of Tracey Emin" (2000), as a reissue publication printed by Stuttgart-based collaboration Edition Taube. The book, based on a short story that is about a character, Abdülbaki Readymade who wants to kidnap Tracey Emin, includes illustrations, notes, and images forming a fictive diary. Sener´s position coming from peripheral atlas enables him to develop a humorous language about the centralization of contemporary art and its function as fame industry.

At the centre of the second floor of Künstlerhaus Stuttgart, the audience is confronted with a video work in a black box construction: ‘Our Village’ (2004) that shows two young girls play-backing a Kurdish song. The song portraits a village, which is near Mountain Bingöl in South Anatolia. Like a music video with subtitled lyrics, the video invites us to join itself with a joyful start, but the emotions move through seasons at the Mountain Bingöl, spring, summer, fall and winter -leaving a hit of social reality on our face.

Surrounding this construction, there are installed recent photography works from Özmen, and each image is based on different associations and references: “Catharsis” reinterprets Heraclitus`s famous saying, "You cannot step twice into the same stream" as a mockery of GAP, the most important and multi billion dollar development project of Turkey, “The Flag” ironically shows a flag ceremony as something that causes crick, and “Seyhmus and Ilhan” creates a curiosity about the level of intimacy between two men. In each of them, Özmen manages to leave the audience with a frame that the narrations can exist as open critique.

"The Story of Sener Özmen / Die Geschicte von Sener Özmen" presents a collaborative work from Sener Özmen and Cengiz Tekin; series of videos titled as “The Original Message” in four parts: Hope; View; Bravo; and One Day a "T" and a "K” (2006-09). Dedicated to the Situationist tradition, and referring to the past, present and future the artist duo produces four videos with different effects and technical formats as autobiographical fragments of experimental narrative.

"The Story of Sener Özmen" is the first solo exhibition after twenty-one years of research, production, and display. It brings together recent works with earlier ones aiming to link his conceptual attitude and ironic language to the discussion of representation of politics today.

The year 2011 is off to an ambitions start with numberous NYC galleries introducing new artists and art shows within the first two weeks of January. Casita Maria Center for Arts & Education, although not a traditional gallery, is also joining the trend by ringing the new year with "Superheroes", an art show curated by Wirth Art Advisory. The show will be open to the public from January 21st to March 2nd, with a special opening reception on January 20th from 6-8pm.

"Superheroes" is a group show that includes eleven artists, several of whom are represented in galleries outside the United States; Sener Ozmen is represented in Turkey by Outlet Gallery, and Melissa Mejia, Gerald Ellis and Tania Marmolejo are represented in the Dominican Republic by the Lyle O. Reitzel Gallery. the six other artists with work in the show are: Adam Parker Smith, Ruth Ava Lyons, James Seward, D*Face, Phillip Simpson, artist duo Batman & Batman, plus Valarie Hird of Nohra Haime Gallery.

Whether "Superheroes" is to be taken literally, or figuratively, as in a local superhero, the show's eclectric selection of artwork is bound to attract viewers as they see Wonder Woman unraveling from a mass of voluptuous hair, or Superman transforming into a "Super Muslim" throug a series of photographs. There will be more serious components as well; James Seward's "My Brother before Third Deployment" and Ruth Ava Lyons' "Tiananmen" reference important political moments in our history which have created local superheroes at times where there was a real need for them.

It is appropriate that Casita Maria should be hosting "Superheroes", as the Center itself has attained a superhero-like status within its own community. Situated right by Hunts Point, a block from the 6 train stop in the Bronx, Casita Maria is considered a haven where students can learn about all different forms of art and culture. Everyone is accepted, and students are encouraged to pursue their dreams, with mentors.

Büyükşehir Belediye Başkanı Osman Baydemir eşi Reyhan Yalçındağ ile birlikte katıldığı sergi kentteki sanatseverlerden de büyük ilgi gördü. Küratör Azra Tüzünoğlu ve sanatçı Şener Özmen’in eşliğinde sergiyi gezen Baydemir; Halil Altındere, Canan, Aslı Çavuşoğlu, Köken Ergun, Bengü Karaduman, Şener Özmen, Özlem Sulak ve MSGSÜ Kolektif Bellek Grubu’nun çalışmalarını çok beğendiğini ifade ederek sanatçıları kutladı.

Açılışta konuşan Anadolu Kültür A.Ş Yönetim Kurulu Başkanı Osman Kavala bu serginin DSM’nin Diyar Galeria’daki son sergileri olacağını söyleyerek bundan sonra DSM’nin sergilerini kentin diğer sanat mekanlarında sanatseverlerle buluşturmaya devam edeceğini söyledi.

Büyükşehir Belediye Başkanı Osman Baydemir de DSM’nin kentteki kültür ve sanat çalışmalarına çok önemli bir katkı sunduğunu belirterek “Siz kentin en güzel renklerinden birisiniz. Büyük bir memnuniyetle bugüne kadar olduğu gibi bugünden sonra da belediyemizin bütün mekanları DSM’ye tereddütsüz açık olacaktır” dedi. Bir sanat eserini yorumlamak ve bir algı çıkarmak için o eserde konuşulan dili bilmek gerekmediğini söyleyen Baydemir “O esere bakmak bence yeterli miktarda anlaşılmayı sağlıyor. Dolayısıyla sanatın dili yoktur, sanat çok dillidir. Sanat evrenseldir” dedi. Toplumu bellek kaybına uğratmamak gerektiğini belirten Baydemir “30 yıldır büyük bir yanlışın yaralarını halen sarmış değiliz. Umarım ortak çabayla barış, dostluk, hoşgörü belleğini hep beraber yaratır, geçmişimizde tüm hataları görerek bunların kaynaklarını ortadan kaldırırız” diye konuştu.

ART IST KUKU NU UT is a new contemporary art festival that starts right now in the city of Tartu, Estonia. Never heard about this place? Tartu is a tiny wooden town in the ultimate end of Eastern Europe. With its 100 000 inhabitants and the oldest university in Estonia the city is 188 km far from Tallinn, the Capital of Republic and suffering from the "second city" complex. Still no idea? Perhaps you have heard of semiotics and Yuri Lotman? Yes, this is the place and semiotics is the trendiest course to attend in University of Tartu. It's not fashionable to be fashionable in Tartu. "Visual art still deals with the problems of impressionism here," to quote the institutional critique by the local artists.

In an environment with such background we – as organizers of the festival of contemporary art – are interested in carrying out an experiment: would it be possible to synchronize the activities of such a peripheral and soporific town with the international contemporary art scene, to mark it on the big picture? What kind of impact would the processes about to be launched have on the environment and the people? How to finally wake up?
ART IST KUKU NU UT of 2010 is dedicated to the preparatory process for the future festivals – we map the dreams and desires of the local professionals, measuring the readiness of the politicians and institutions to host a major contemporary art event in this small town in Eastern Europe. "ART IST KUKU NU UT. The exhibition "Annex 6. The Politics of the Invisible Hand" is a contributing part of this year's ART IST KUKU NU UT festival that in itself is a preparation and run-up to next year's festival. The subjective study of the contemporary art scene in Tartu, a publication accompanying the project, maps the positions and movements, visions and structures in Tartu as a certain point in time and space. However, the exhibition that forms an annex to this study has a somewhat broader relationship with the topic. The goal is to review and analyze the socio-economic situation that is the inevitable background system for a contemporary cultural production. The work that paves the way for new nuggets of knowledge and cognitive nuances has been performed with the means offered by contemporary art and the study group is composed of a selection of artists who are active in Europe and treat the surrounding environment with a sharp eye. Main working methods include (self-)ironic distancing, demonstrative gestures and ambivalent images of comparison from life itself.

This exhibition "Annex 6. The Politics of the Invisible Hand" has no strict center or a certain leading narrative, it should rather be seen as the subjective selection of the various activity logics of "the invisible hand" and our responses to those movements. One must remember that "the invisible hand" that Adam Smith phrased and that became a metaphor for self-regulation in economics is indeed invisible, i.e. we do not see the hand, but rather the result of its action. True, in one case the artists managed to capture the hand on thermal camera, but there is still much unexplained in the hand's micro-movements. It directs, regulates and forces us to act in the ways it want. We are surrounded by the puppet theater of an invisible hand…

All works are penetrated by the parallel, crossing and penetrating topics that we can only start to articulate in keywords. The first topical direction is formed by works that reflect back specifically on the position of art and the artist, reflecting on the creative environment around them – they ridicule the principles of creative economy that the national cultural policy has adapted for them; make (self-)ironical remarks on the social position, survival means, working methods and "client relations"of the artist; visualize the problems of intellectual work. Doesn't it sound ridiculous, this direct, automatic and careless transfer of economic principles to the field of art and cultural production? Do we not talk too often about a mission instead of real income? Is being an artist more a matter of faith than anything else?

Another topical keyword might be the wanna-be mentality as a completely respectable road to a professional position, income, peace of mind. Artists depict – and perhaps secretly also ridicule – the attempts by themselves and other to be better than others, to be someone else, to imitate success and that winning mentality, to hide one's weaknesses, and to talk loudly of great successes. This portion of the works seems to outline this mental space that is filled with dominating values and is shaped by the media, employers, politicians and the entertainment industry. The locally grown neoliberal karaoke-capitalism, the foolish optimism that for years fed the economic boom, the faith in the infinite economic growth and the free market - aren't these the compensation mechanisms for various inferiority complexes that might require us to stop and look around with a (self-)critical eye?

One of the popular understandings of art considers art to be a mirror that should reflect life and reality around us. We wish to satisfy the desires of the greater masses and show our audiences a mirror – in this exhibition there are no myths, only reality itself! While the distortions might be great and the exhibition might seem like a carnival mirror, I feel confident in assuring that life in Tartu, Estonia and the former Eastern Europe really is that distorted and misshapen like a delirious nightmare. Enjoy, enjoy, enjoy!

During the opening of the exhibition on Sept 8h, at 7 pm, a performance-product presentation by Visible Solutions LLC, and at 8 pm a screening of the "dünya dinlemiyor" ("the world won't listen") by Phil Collins will take place.

Sezgin Boynik (Kosovo) - Force of trauma

Force of trauma tries to show how some contemporary art scenes are influenced by recent traumatic events. Case studies will specifically include contemporary art produced in Kosovo and in Diyarbakir. Sezgin Boynik will analyse and compare art produced in these two regions in order to show how some historical circumstances have an effect on transforming traumatic experiences. He will also try to show how some artists from Kosovo, where trauma is relatively in the past, are silencing the effects and memory of their traumatic experiences. He uses the theories of Shoshana Felman to analyse young artist Jakup Ferri from Kosovo and to compare his practice with the artist and writer Sener Ozmen from Diyarbakir.

Sezgin Boynik completed his graduate studies in Mimar Sinan University Sociology Department with a thesis on Situationist International in 2003. He prepared the book "Nationalism and Contemporary Art" with Minna Henriksson and ''History of Punk and Underground Resources in Turkey 1978-1999'' with Tolga Güldallý in 2007. Currently living in Pristina, Kosovo, he lectures at the Faculty of Philology at the University of Pristina.

When Ideas Become Crime

Curated by Halil Altındere, the most comprehensive contemporary art exhibition of the year, brings together 48 artists of different generations from Turkey, who explore the threshold between freedom of expression and crime.

Halil Altındere chooses an (art) historical reference once again for the title of his fifth curatorial undertaking: inspired by Herald Szeeman's exhibition "When Attitudes Become Form", he brings together 48 artists with the slogan "When Ideas Become Crime".

Altındere displays a position of opposition and provocation by presenting political attitudes put forth by artists. One axis of the exhibition is articulated by works, which reflect on militarism, power, hierarchy, nationalism, collective memory, border and gender politics. There is also a more introspective approach, which self-critically reflects on the symbolic economy and power structures among which contemporary art is flourishing.

As it has been with previous Halil Altındere exhibitions, struggles in the cultural field are being organized to empower the collective spirit. The exhibition brings together artists from different generations and multiple geographical locations; İstanbul, İzmir, Diyarbakır, Mardin, Berlin, Frankfurt, Amsterdam and New York. This constellation allows for recognizing similar tendencies as well as starting a dialogue between different artistic and political positions. By bringing together works by Altan Gürman, Gülsün Karamustafa and Hüseyin Alptekin with generations who started their practice in 1990s and 2000s, relationships between generations are constructed. Being the work of an artist-curator, the exhibition supports the production of many new works, as well as opening up an experimental space for context-specific reinterpretation of existing works.

Ihre Destination, das legendäre Museum in der Kunstmetropole London, scheint ähnlich unerreichbar wie die EU-Mitgliedschaft der Türkei. Doch wie war das: Der Weg ist das... Ziel? Oder war aller Anfang schwer?

“Türkischer Witz und türkische Schwermut sind in den Werken des Museums immer dabei, oft Hand in Hand. So in der köstlichen Videoarbeit "Der Weg nach Tate Modern" von Sener Özmen und Erkan Özgen (lebt und arbeitet in Diyarbakir). Zwei Machos in schwarzem Anzug reiten da Don Quichotesk auf Esel und Pferd durch kurdische Schluchten und Wüsteneien, auf der Suche

...Im Schatten Buntes

Das Jahr 2010 steht in der Türkei ganz im Zeichen der Europäischen Kulturhaupt-stadt Istanbul. Im offiziellen Programm präsentiert sich die „hippe Stadt am Horn“ als multiethnische Megacity, die den Spagat zwischen Moderne und Tradition ebenso meistert wie den Brückenschlag zwischen Asien und Europa. Doch ebenso „Tüpisch Türkisch“ wie die Schokoladenseite der Bosporus-Metropole sind auch ihre Problemzonen, ihre Hinterhöfe und Vororte.
Die vierte Ausgabe der Filmreihe blickt in soziale und kulturelle Parallelwelten und Provinzen. Drei Schwerpunkte haben sich dabei herauskristallisiert:

Der türkische Osten: Aktuelle Spiel- und Dokumentarfilme widmen sich Leben, Kultur, Spiritualität des Ostens, die nach Jahrzehnten des Schweigens wieder
In den Blick der Öffentlichkeit rücken.
Die türkischen Roma: Haluk und Elmas Arus werden persönlich ihren Film „Bucuk“ vorstellen, eine temporeiche und temperamentvolle Reise durch die Roma-Gemeinschaften der Türkei. Außerdem: Filme über den İstanbuler Stadtteil Sulukule - eine der ältesten europäischen Roma-Siedlungen überhaupt; doch den Nachbarn gelten die „Zigeuner“ immer noch als Fremdlinge, und Politiker wie Spekulanten betrachten das historische Erbe vor allem als wertvollen Baugrund. Wie manch anderes Viertel vorher, wurde Sulukule im Zuge eines „Gentrifizierungsprojektes“ - zeitgleich mit den Kulturhauptstadtplanungen - abgerissen.
Der dritte Schwerpunkt - „Fremde Frauen“ – präsentiert u. a. eine Dokumentation über das bewegte Leben der transsexuellen Ex-Prostituierten und jetzigen Muschelverkäuferin und Performerin Esmeray.

Das bunte Treiben im idyllischen Hasankeyf ist bedroht – ein Staudamm soll das Örtchen unter Wasser setzen, die Dorfbevölkerung muss umgesiedelt werden. Journalist Metin schließt sich einer wenig konstruktiven, korrupten Widerstandsbewegung ein; das Mädchen Roz plädiert für einen anderen Weg… Dokumentarfilmerin Handan Öztürk erzählt ihr Spielfilmdebüt mit Charme, Humor und Tempo, knüpft aber an einen dringenden, aktuellen Fall an: Tatsächlich ist das riesige südostanatolische Staudammprojekt (GAP) eines jener technokratischen Prestigeprojekte, dessen ökologische, ökonomische und soziale Folgen kaum abzuschätzen sind. Nach einem vorübergehenden Baustopp soll das uralte, geschichtsträchtige Hasankeyf am Tigris (mit UNESCO-Weltkulturerbestatus) nun geflutet werden.

Als der junge Lehrer Emre nach Urfa im türkischen Osten versetzt wird, stößt er auf eine andere Welt – kaum ein Kind versteht etwas anderes als den lokalen kurdischen Dialekt. Während er mal geduldige, mal verzweifelnde Lehrer die Herausforderung annimmt , und den ABC-Schützen patriotische Sätze über die Türkische Nation einbläut, geht es für die ansässigen Familien eher um das bloße Überleben in dem kargen Landstrich. Emres einziger Kontakt zur Moderne sind die Telefonate mit seiner Mutter. Haluk und Elmas Arus haben über 5 Jahre hinweg unterschiedliche Zigeuner-Communities besucht - 38 Orte in sieben verschiedenen Provinzen – und Tradition und Gemeinschaftsleben, Wünsche und Erinnerungen der Völker der Rom, Dom, Lom kennen gelernt. Die vor 800-1000 Jahren aus Indien Zugewanderten fanden in einem an türkischer Monokultur ausgerichteten Staat dennoch keine Heimat. Jetzt, wo sich die moderne Türkei allmählich auf das Erbe ihrer Minoritäten und Randgruppen besinnt, rückt die einflussreiche Kultur, die eigene Lebensform der Roma langsam ins Bewusstsein, und ist doch von Zersplitterung und Assimilation bedroht. So waren die Filmemacher auch als Kulturbotschafter unterwegs, die den verstreuten Sippen ein Gefühl der gemeinsamen Identität, des geteilten Erbes zurückgeben.

Zusammen: 90 min, unterschiedliche Formate

Während Istanbul sich als Kulturhauptstadt feiert, lassen Immobilienspekulanten im Verein mit der Stadtverwaltung im großen Stil ganze historische Viertel abreißen. Besonderes Aufsehen erweckte der Fall des jahrhundertealten Sulukule, im traditionellen Fatih an der byzantinischen Stadtmauer gelegen. Ohne hinreichende Infrastruktur zu einem Leben in permanenter Vorläufigkeit verdammt, profitierten die dort ansässigen Roma zumindest vom gegenseitigen sozialen Rückhalt. Trotz internationaler Proteste kam letztes Jahr das Abrisskommando, die Roma-Community wurde über den Stadtraum verstreut. Anderen Vierteln steht ein ähnliches Schicksal bevor.

In einer verschneiten Grenzstadt taucht ein gehetzter Vagabund auf, rettet einen kleinen Jungen vor dem Ertrinken und gilt fortan als Wunderheiler. Battal, der sich „Kosmos“ nennt, ist ein Heiliger Narr, der nach anfänglicher Bewunderung zum misstrauisch beäugten Außenseiter wird; einzig mit Neptün, der Schwester des geretteten Jungen verbindet ihn eine seltsame Liebe. „Kosmos“ ist auch eine mystische Parabel über einen Dostojewskischen Idioten mit sozialrevolutionären Tendenzen, einen Robin Hood mit schamanistischen Kräften. Erdems Film wurde im äußersten Osten, in Kars, gedreht, wobei die Filmstadt - von Militärs besetzt, mit einer Geräuschkulisse aus entferntem Gefechtslärm, Sirenengeheul – als fiktiver, surrealer Ort erscheint. Die eindringliche Soundmontage und Bilder von rarer Schönheit machen „Kosmos“ zu einer besonderen sinnlichen Erfahrung. Reha Erdem möchte Filme machen „wie ein Gebetsruf“, weit entfernt vom grassierenden türkischen Kommerzkino.

Beyoglu, im Herzen des alten Istanbul, war lange Zeit Rückzugsgebiet der Istanbuler Transen, bevor sie in weniger attraktive Viertel abgedrängt wurden. Melisa Önels Doku porträtiert die transsexuelle Ex-Prostituierte und jetzige Muschelverkäuferin und Performerin Esmeray. Fast im Plauderton lässt diese ihr übervolles, bewegtes Leben Revue passieren: Kindheit in Kars im türkischen Osten, Entdeckung der sexuellen Identität, Diskriminierung und Missbrauch, und der Kampf um Autonomie und Akzeptanz.

Einen „Dokumentarfilm“ will der Komponist, Arrangeur und Musikproduzent Nezih Ünen dieses poetische Werk gar nicht nennen, das während seiner insgesamt achtjährigen Wanderungen durch anatolische Dörfer entstand. Auf 40.000 Reisekilometern entdeckt er mit der Musikkultur des Ostens auch uralte Mythen und Rituale; vom vermeintlich modernen türkischen Westen lange verachtet, verdrängt und teilweise vernichtet, haben sie doch auch das städtische Leben nachhaltig geprägt. Ünen entlockt lokalen Interpreten lange verbotene, jetzt vergessene kurdische Lieder und armenische Weisen. Indem er diese erstmalig einem breiteren Publikum zugänglich macht, erweckt er die einstige Vielfalt der Sprachen, Tänze und Melodien wieder zum Leben. Entsprechend begeistert war das Echo in der türkischen Presse, als der Film 2009 in Istanbul Premiere feierte.

Halil Altındere, hazırladığı beşinci sergide, yine (sanat) tarihsel referansı olan bir başlık seçiyor: 1969 yılında, bağımsız küratörlüğün öncülerinden Harald Szeeman'ın "Tavırlar Biçime Dönüşünce" sergisinin başlığından esinlenerek, "Fikirler Suça Dönüşünce" sloganı altında, farklı kuşak, tutum ve dillerden gelen genç güncel sanat enerjisini ortaya çıkarıyor.

Altındere, sanatçılar tarafından üretilmiş politik tutumları ilişkilendirerek; içinde varolduğu topluma muhalefet eden, sataşan bir duruş sergiliyor. Siyasi ortamın belleğini tutan, militarizm, iktidar, hiyerarşi, milliyetçilik, sınır ve toplumsal cinsiyet politikalarının eleştirisine yoğunlaşan işler serginin bir aksını oluşturuyor. Bir yandan da içe bakan; güncel sanatın hangi simgesel ekonomiler ve iktidar biçimleri içinde etkinleştiğini kurcalayan öz-eleştiri görünür oluyor.

Önceki Halil Altındere sergilerinde olduğu gibi, kültür alanında gerçekleşen mücadele örgütlenerek kollektif ruh güçlendiriliyor. İstanbul, İzmir, Diyarbakır, Mardin, Berlin, Frankfurt, Amsterdam ve New York'ta yaşayan, farklı kuşaklardan Türkiyeli genç sanatçıları yan yana getiren sergi, ortak eğilimleri olduğu kadar, farklı sanatsal ve politik duruşları da birbiriyle diyalog içine sokuyor. Altan Gürman, Gülsün Karamustafa ve Hüseyin Alptekin'in işlerini, 1990 ve 2000 sonrası güncel sanat pratiğine başlamış sanatçılarla birlikte sergileyerek, kuşaklararası ilişkiler kuruyor. Bir sanatçı-küratörün elinden çıkan sergide, birçok yeni işin üretimi destekleniyor ve varolan işlerin mekana ve bağlama özel yorumlanabileceği deneysel alanlar açılıyor.

Documenta, Manifesta, Sao Paolo, Guanju, Setinye ve İstanbul bienallerine sanatçı olarak katılan Halil Altındere, bugüne dek ‘Kötüyüm ve Gurur Duyuyorum' (2002), ‘Seni Öldüreceğim İçin Çok Üzgünüm' (2003), ‘Serbest Vuruş' (2005), ‘Gerçekçi Ol, İmkansızı Talep Et!' (2007) sergilerinin küratörlüğünü yapmıştır.
